Linda Carroll, CCM, is currently serving as the President of the National Board of Directors of the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA). She has held the position of general manager of White Bear Yacht Club since 1989 and has been involved in the management of private clubs in the U.S. for a number of years.

Good Morning.

My name is Linda Carroll, and I am president of the Club Managers Association of America, also known as “CMAA,” which represents more than 7,000 club managers at more than 3,000 private clubs in the United States.  Eighty percent of CMAA member-managed clubs offer golf, making the business aspect of golf a fundamental part of the daily operations the typical club manager oversees.

However, golf is much more than just a financial part of the club business. Naturally, it is a game that brings people together, but more and more, it is a game that is bringing people of all walks of life together. CMAA supports the efforts of organizations such as the PGA of America, U.S. Kids Golf, The First Tee Program and many others who work to make the game affordable for people of all ages and at all levels of income.

While golf becomes more and more a multi-demographic, global sport, its role in our local communities grows stronger. Golf is more of a family activity than it has ever been. We are seeing an explosion in the number of women and junior golfers; the ways in which people consume golf is evolving, as are the ways in which golf is impacting our lives.

Yes, the demographic CMAA member clubs serve is one that has significant disposable income. They fall into the upper tiers of the earnings brackets. And they can afford to play golf at finer facilities. But don’t let those facts skew your perception.

The communities and lifestyles built around golf – and around the clubs CMAA members manage – are ones that have an undeniable social conscious. CMAA member-managed clubs donated between $80 and $85 million to charity each year.

A significant part of this money was raised under the auspices of the charity golf tournament, an event that is steadily growing in giving power among private clubs. These tournaments are held to benefit wounded American soldiers and their families, sick and disabled children and adults, people who are homeless and hungry, victims of disaster… and the list goes on. These events pull together the community like no other occasion.

In January of this year, a brand new, state-of-the-art training complex for disabled children and adults opened in Palm Beach County, Florida. The building of the complex was funded in large part by money donated from golf tournaments held by the Seminole Region of CMAA’s Florida Chapter. The complex offers a specially-equipped swimming facility, specialized and therapeutic fitness, training facilities for all types of sports and even visual and performing arts.

今年一月，一个专门为残疾人设计的训练综合场地在佛罗里达洲的棕榈滩投入使用，该场地设计新颖、设施先进。其大部分建造的费用来自CMAA佛罗里达分会米诺尔区所举办的高尔夫球巡回赛的捐款。这个场地为各种运动提供了特制的游泳设备、专门的有疗效的健身器材，训练设备等等。甚至还有一些视觉、表演艺术的内容。

While this is just one example, I think it clearly illustrates how strong a positive impact private clubs and the game of golf can have on the lives of many and on the communities in which we all live.   

It has often been said that golf is a game that closely mimics life; a game in which one should strive to do well but not be too concerned about their score; to be aware of life's hazards, but not afraid; to have as much a grip on oneself as one has on their clubs; and to be grateful at the end of each round for the opportunity to have played.

在这里我只是举了一个例子，但是我认为它已经足以说明私人俱乐部和高尔夫球运动对我们的生活和社区带来的积极影响。

也有很多人说高尔夫球运动折射了人生哲理。在这种运动中，人们要尽力做好，不要过于在乎分数；要意识到生命充满危险，但不要惧怕；要紧紧把握自己，就像把握手中的球杆；而当打完每一轮之后则要为能有机会打球而心存感激。

I think the evidence of golf’s positive influence is all around us, certainly in the United States and especially in and around the clubs CMAA members oversee. I hope we continue to be guided by the wisdom the game can teach us, and embrace the community aspects the game promotes.

我想，关于高尔夫球运动的积极影响，我们举不胜举，当然在美国和CMAA成员管理的俱乐部更是这样。我希望高尔夫球运动的智慧能继续引领我们，而我们也能欣然接受高尔夫球所倡导的社区理念。
